  • Build safer habits before every drive

Set up before you set off

Adjust your seat and mirrors, secure loose items, and set your route while parked. Make sure everyone is properly buckled. Put your phone out of reach or silence notifications so a message does not compete for your attention.

Match your driving to the conditions

A posted speed limit does not mean that speed is safe in every situation. Rain, poor visibility, traffic, and road work can call for a slower speed and more space. Read the road ahead and follow the current signs and your state handbook.

Give aggressive drivers space. Avoid responding with gestures, sudden braking, or a contest over position. Choose a safe way to disengage from the situation.

    Know when to stop

Do not start a drive when you are too tired to stay alert. If you become drowsy, find a safe place to stop and address the fatigue. Loud music or an open window does not replace sleep.

If a task needs your attention—such as changing a route or responding to a message—wait until you can stop in a safe place and park. A few minutes spent preparing can keep the driving task simpler.
